Nwesletter, February 2009

Dear friends:

We welcome you to the pages of our bulletin. It is good to know that, despite the economic shake-ups and instability of today, you continue to help and to support our activities.

This month, thanks to our benefactors, several children received new wheelchairs and nursing beds purchased with the funds from a Rotary International Matching Grant successfully completed by Fidalgo Island Rotary Club.

For a child compelled to spend all the day in a wheelchair it is very important that the wheelchair is comfortable, solid, and easy to operate. Anton Z. was presented with an electronic wheelchair. Anton and his mother dreamt of such a wheelchair for a long time but they could not afford to buy it. Now Anton is able to move much easier and faster, and his mother’s care load has decreased.

Pasha is not able to sit and to eat by himself. Someone has to change his underclothes. It is hard for his mother even to raise and to seat him in bed. The family was provided with a nursing bed, which made care for him much more convenient for his mother.

We already wrote that Tolya S. dreamt of a lifter. Every year he noticed how much effort it cost for his mother to bring him and his wheelchair down the stairs each time. Moreover, they are very active people and don’t like to sit home. They try to attend various events. Tolya wished for a lifter as a New Year’s gift. There were people who could not be indifferent to the persistence, activity and optimism of this family. Tolya became the owner of a remarkable device that allows him to go down the stairs on his wheelchair independently.
At present our doctors provide consultations and assist parents with preparing an application for Individual Rehabilitation Program for the Disabled. This state program includes a complex of necessary rehabilitation activities which are optimum for the disabled person and are directed towards restoring or compensating his disturbed or lost organism functions. It will allow us in the future to work more effectively on improvement of life quality of our patients, supplementing the issues which the state provides in an insufficient degree.

It is important for us that the life of our patients would be interesting and not monotonous. In February our children attended a circus show
« Clown’s Birthday ». Both adults and children enjoyed the program: the witty pranks of clowns, the charming tricks of acrobats and certainly the cheerful performances by various animals.
We try to bring diversity into entertainments for the children and let them visit various unusual places. For example, the Project “ETAZHI” (“FLOORS”) (Association of Galleries of the Modern Art) invited us to an exhibition of joint works of young Saint-Petersburg artists and of patients of a Psycho-neurological Care Center. After visiting the exhibition, the children could attend a master-class on drawing where everyone could feel himself a true artist.
Two years in succession our fans of martial arts may attend the “Mixed Fight Show” - an interesting and spectacular entertainment show taking place in Saint-Petersburg. The children not only watched the fights of sportsmen but also received autographs and were photographed with them.
A true gift for many children became an invitation to the ice show «Town Musicians of Bremen». Everyone received great pleasure from the performance.

Misha S. always dreamt to go for a drive in the cabin of a metro locomotive-driver. And his dream came true! He sat near the driver and observed him at work - the boy was in rapture, as he told his relatives about it. Misha felt very badly in his last days. Only computer games distracted him from pain for a while. After the trip, Misha asked his mother for games about trains. He became interested in the work of the underground. Unfortunately, it was the last dream of Misha we had time to fulfill. The boy died on 14th of March. We grieve together with his family.

One of the most important directions of our work is training and prevention of the emotional burn-out of our volunteers. During interacting with severely sick children they have many questions about how to communicate with their parents, about life, death, and illness. We have arranged a seminar especially for volunteers working in the Scientific Research Institute of Oncology. Our psychotherapist, E. Ljubovskaja, answered their questions and shared her experience. Our volunteers transform boring everyday lives of sick children into bright interesting holidays. We are very grateful to them for it.

We already told you about the cartoon films being made by our patients under direction of professional animators. Recently these cartoon films have been presented at an international festival in Finland. Three of our children went to this festival as well.

One of the most active participants of cartoon films studio is Roma D. Because of his disease Roma is compelled to move in a wheelchair and he spends most of his time at home. But despite that, Roma is a marvelously bright and positive person, a pure soul who never becomes despondent. He has a lot of free time which he spends on creative work. Roma possesses a rich imagination and has a lot of ideas. Our social worker and the animation studio help him realize them. Roma cannot go to school - he tries to learn more from the teachers coming to his home. The boy attends master-classes of decorative art and drawing with pleasure. He dreams of traveling, and we help him to realize these dreams.

As Roma has to sit the most of the day, it’s important to keep watch that no bedsores appear. We supply the boy with anti-decubitus mattresses and our nurse is always ready to assist his mother with a consultation. Ever since Roma has been in our charge, all members of this amicable family have become our friends and assistants.

We have shared our joys and problems with you. Both are represented in our work in plenty but, thanks to your support, we manage to realize more and more interesting projects and to make the lives of sick children more interesting and active. Thank you for your help to Children's Hospice!

We hope that what you have read touches both your heart and your soul. Please share this joy with your friends and pass this newsletter on to some of them. If any questions arise, don’t hesitate to contact us. We are always happy to hear from you.

Yours faithfully,

Fr. Alexander Tkachenko, Children’s Hospice, February 2009
