Newsletter, April 2009

Dear friends!

By telling about the everyday working life of our organization and about events which have happened in Children's Hospice, we try also to draw the attention of Russian society to the problems of physically disabled children with limited movement. It is encouraging that the majority of city organizations meets the wishes of the children and donates to us tickets for concerts and invites the children to interesting events. However, each such trip still remains a very difficult organizational challenge in St. Petersburg.

Public transportation and many buildings in the city are not wheelchair-friendly. This makes such trips a rare occurrence for the children. We are grateful to our volunteers who always respond to our requests to give a lift in their private cars and to accompany the children. We desire so much that children in wheelchairs not be considered any more in Russia to be “out of the way” in a puppet theater, in an entertainment park or in a circus and that the mothers of ill children would not need to ask several people for help if one or another public building is not equipped with a lift.

With your help we not only provide quality health services to our patients, but we also bring the families back to an active social life. We make the lives of our patients, who are disadvantaged since their early childhood and are compelled to struggle for each day of life, more stimulating and interesting.

In April Children’s Hospice took under its care some more children with severe, incurable diseases. Our doctors improved their medication treatment; our social workers and psychologists got acquainted with the families and defined the format of needed care. We supplied several patients with rehabilitation equipment.

Unfortunately, the health conditions of Christina C. and Boris L. remain severe. The children are being treated in a hospital. Our employees do their best to help these families cope with this difficult situation.

This month Liza S. passed away. The girl’s health condition worsened throughout the whole year. Nevertheless, her death was very hard on both the girl’s family and our employees. We are grieving and we will keep this little girl in our memories forever.

Events our children attended in April:

Pasha D. has many different interests. He is fond both of space exploration history and of travelling and geographic maps. However, the oldest passion of the boy is trains and everything connected with the railway. Because of his illness, any travel is a rarity for Pavel. That’s why on his birthday we arranged an excursion to the St. Petersburg Railway Museum. When Pasha learned where he was go to, his joy had no limits. While in the Museum, the boy listened to the guide very attentively and examined transport means of different ages. Pasha has difficulties with speaking, therefore his mother, who was also greatly impressed by the Museum, “translated” for him.
The newest hobby of the boy is construction of his own railway by means of a special computer simulator program. Supported by a Hospice volunteer, the boy has already constructed much. After visiting the Museum Pasha decided to add some ancient trains to modern ones, as the computer world does not have any limits for imagination and creativity.

One of the most interesting events was a visit to the broadcasting studio “Radio Rocks”. Many of our children love this radio station and often listen to its music. They were presented with an opportunity to play the DJ’s role, to take part in recording a broadcast and even to announce some songs on the air. After the broadcast the children had an opportunity to speak to and to be photographed with a known Russian actress and radio DJ Anastasiya Melnikova.
In making a program of entertainment for our children, we try to consider the variety of their hobbies and interests. Some love modern rock and attended a show of the rock band "Amatory ". Others had pleasure by singing retro-songs together with their mothers on a recital of a known Russian singer Ilya Reznik.

Every month our fans of Japanese cuisine attend a seminar in the restaurant « Two chopsticks » held by its sushi-chefs. Under direction of the experts, our children together with their parents make sushi and rolls. Moreover, they can learn a lot of interesting things about Japanese cookery and traditions of Japan.
Many of our younger kids keep track of the adventures of cartoon serial «Luntik» (“Little Moonian”) characters. But it was even more interesting for them to watch a play about Luntik and his friends. Both children and adults liked very much a kind fairy-tale about the “lunar bee”, about friendship and helping each other in difficult situations.

Do you know anyone who did not collect small figures from chocolate eggs in the childhood? And who would not like to visit a chocolate factory? In April one of such factories invited us for a visit. The children not only saw the process of manufacturing the chocolate eggs, but each of them was presented with a whole chocolate set. The excursion turned out to be not only interesting but also very tasty.
We are glad to share our news with you! We hope that what you have read touches both your heart and your soul. Please share this joy with your friends and pass this newsletter on to some of them. If any questions arise, don’t hesitate to contact us. We are always happy to hear from you.

See you in the next issue of our bulletin.

Yours faithfully,

Fr. Alexander Tkachenko, Children’s Hospice, April 2009
