Newsletter, May 2009

Dear friends:

We are glad to greet you again on these pages of our monthly bulletin!

From the beginning of this year our work proceeds in two levels: on the one hand, we perform the usual scheduled work, on the other hand, we have much work with preparations for opening a new permanent Children’s Hospice facility. The Children’s Hospice medical service carries the main load on its shoulders. The doctors and nurses discuss advantages and disadvantages of different kinds of equipment to be purchased as well as medicines needed and requirements of the personnel of the future hospital. The problem is complicated because there are no analogues of similar establishments in Russia. We have to think out and to create many things which have never been made before. It is very interesting, but it is a huge responsibility as well.

Medical events

Additional expert counseling has been provided to two children.

Georgiy M. has been provided with an oxygen concentrator and a pulse oximeter.
Many of our patients need some additional treatments. For example, Kirill needed a dental treatment and Zhenya P. – a rehabilitation course. Children’s Hospice arranged home visits by a masseur and a consultation by a physical therapist for Zhenya.

The most pleasant thing is to tell you about patients whose conditions became better. Anna G. struggled against her illness for a very long time. She underwent a transplant. Now she feels much better. She is recovering and wants to go back to school in a year. Dasha T. feels good, also. This girl is making up for lost time -- she has a job and thinks about studying at university.

Unfortunately, we cannot say the same about Nikita S. and Yura Y. Their conditions have worsened. We support the children and their parents during this difficult period.

Psycho-social activities

We will tell you briefly about the main events in which our patients participated in May.

Soccer fans visited a match of their favorite club "Zenith". This year Spring was late in coming, and the children waited with impatience for warm weather to go to the stadium. The match caused a storm of delight and discussions. The boys kept track of the home matches schedule and started to call the social worker many days early to remind him of the date of the match.
Attending a guest performance of Kuklachev Cats Theater was also a remarkable event. The show was mainly visited by the younger kids, but the adults enjoyed the performance as well. The children were photographed with the known Russian artist and received books written by Yury Kuklachev as a gift.

Once every six months the Hermitage Museum invites us to take part in a special program for children with disabilities. For many of the children it is a unique opportunity to come into the legendary museum and to the Hermitage Theatre. One and a half year ago, when we went there for the first time, we worried a little that our children would get tired or would be bored. But the program turned out to be so interesting, and the performance in the Hermitage Theatre was played on such high professional level, that the second time we did not have enough tickets for all interested children.
We would like to tell you also about an excursion to the St. Petersburg Oceanarium. It has been a usual excursion for unusual children. We arranged this trip for the children being treated in Scientific Research Institute of Oncology in Pesochnoye. One of many problems for these children is the danger of contacts with people outside and the risk of picking up any infection. The treatment lasts very long. The children come from every quarter of Russia. It is natural that they desire very much to see the sights of St. Petersburg. In addition, we plan to arrange a night city excursion.

Dreams Come True

Our « Dreams come true » service fulfilled the dreams of several children.

Pavel D. visited the most modern train «Sapsan» (“Peregrine”), which will go between St. Petersburg and Moscow. It is the fastest train in Russia.

Artem E. is fond of music. He is not only listening to, but also composing music. However, he did not have an appropriate instrument. We presented Artem with a professional synthesizer, with which he is now able to realize his ideas. Artem also received tickets for a concert of his favorite band “Limp Bizkit”.
Kirill I. undergoes treatment in Petrov Scientific Research Institute of Oncology. He has dreamt of a laptop to interact with his friends via the Internet. His dream has been fulfilled. Kirill is now spending all his time mastering the computer. For all that his mood has improved.
On the first of June we usually celebrate the Children's Hospice Birthday. This year we moved the celebration to May, 31st. There was a remarkable feast on a boat as it cruised the Neva River. A troupe of clowns engaged the children and their parents with stories, songs so that the boat was filled with singing and much laughter. The upper deck was filled with helium balloons bearing streamers of origami birds, some of which bore words of greeting and hope. As the cruise made its final lap back to the dock all the children gathered to release the balloons and watch their wishes soar. Here you can watch some photos from the celebration: http://picasaweb.google.ru/Nikuzka/6#

This has been the main news of the Children's Hospice in May. See you in June! Thanks for your help to our ministry!

We hope that what you have read touches both your heart and your soul. Please share this joy with your friends and pass this newsletter on to some of them. If any questions arise, don’t hesitate to contact us. We are always happy to hear from you.

See you in the next issue of our bulletin.

Yours faithfully,

Fr. Alexander Tkachenko, Children’s Hospice, May 2009
