Newsletter, June 2009

Dear Friends:

On June 1st, Children’s Hospice became six years old. We have come a long way! Six years ago several persons decided to help families with sick children suffering from terminal cancer. In due course the number of workers has increased, the patients’ contingent has extended, and the spectrum of our services has broadened as well.

If a child is severely ill, his family needs many different types of help: from expensive medicines to counseling by a psychologist. We have developed possibilities to involve specialized experts such as neurologists, physical training therapists, rehabilitation therapists, etc. It is especially important for our patients living in the distant villages of Leningrad Region (surroundings of St. Petersburg) because they are not always able to come to a district city in order to visit a doctor. Our workers visit the children at home and understand the special conditions and needs of such children very well.

Latest news of our children:

Our oncologist I.J. Rezvanova prescribed pain-killing therapy to Pavel D. She visited him at his parents’ place in Tosno city.

Health conditions of Nikita S. and Yura S. worsened.
Yura was hospitalized in a city hospital. Hospice workers kept in contact with doctors of the hospital. Our psychotherapist had been caring for Yura’s mother. Children’s Hospice provided the boy with appropriate needles for medical portacaths and with a nebulizer.
Our oncologist S.A Safonova visited Nikita S. 2-3 times a week. Nikita was also provided with all necessary medicines.

Unfortunately, Paval D. and Katja O. passed away in June. Nikita S. died on July 1st.

In the May newsletter we did not mention two more children who had died. There had been Borja L. and Christina C. The children and their parents struggled against their illness for a long time. They did not lose hope up to the last minute and supported each other. We express our sorrow to their relatives and share their pain and grief during this hard time.

In the second half of June Children's Hospice doctors met their colleagues from the Russian Ministry of Health and Social Development to exchange their experiences and to strengthen contacts. The main discussion focused on organization of the work of the future Children's Hospice hospital at Kurakina Dacha.

The Consul of Ukraine presented the Children's Hospice with 3 oxygen concentrators and 3 pulse oximeters. These devices can provide additional years of life to patients with oxygen deficiency.

Olga Ivanova, Chief of Children’s Hospice Medical Service, and Polina Ovsjannikova, Head Nurse, visited new patients who were taken in charge in June and defined the plan of care for the families and the volume of necessary material aid.

The cycle of therapeutic meetings held by Tatiana Nikonova for our patients’ parents came to its end. Since December 2008, a group of parents met two times a month for group therapy. For some mothers, this group was not only a place for dialogue and interaction but also a good opportunity to solve their personal and family problems.

One of the most significant events of June was a visit of Andrey Arshavin to the Children's Branch of Petrov Scientific Research Institute of Oncology. Due to his outstanding game skills, the St. Petersburg soccer player Arshavin became known not only in Russia but also in Europe. It is wonderful that he found time to visit children for whom even attending a football stadium still remains an unrealizable dream. The children spoke with their idol, and received autographs and gifts. The meeting with Andrey Arshavin had been a treasured dream of Oleg S. and Kyrill I. – on June 27th this dream came true.
Paintball is one of the most popular leisure activities of recent years. Our children had been asking us for a long time whether it would be possible for them to play, or at least to watch such a game. We waited till the warm weather came and went to a specialized club. The children played for some hours and returned home tired, hungry, but very happy.
We would like to thank the St. Petersburg Dolphinarium for offering our patients the opportunity to attend its shows free of charge and, moreover, to go down to the pool, to stroke dolphins and to be photographed with them. This month the visit to the Dolphinarium coincided with the birthday of Masha F. The girl received special gifts from its actors.

Every summer we arrange an excursion for our children. This year the company “City-Tour” placed a two-story bus at our disposal. Our children enjoyed a trip by such a bus for the first time. The bus drove to the center of the city. Guide services for interested children were also provided. The narration by the guide was fascinating, included interesting and unknown details of history of our city and was especially liked by everybody.
Darina Yakunina, leader of Children’s Hospice “Dreams Come True” service, had been making preparations for a charitable auction for two months. Hand works by our patients to the theme “I dream about …” were exhibited in the Gallery of Arts “Kgallery” for a week. On June 25th the auction took place. Many businessmen and well-known people of St. Petersburg gathered in the gallery. The funds from sale of the hand works will be used to make dreams of several children come true.
The gallery arranged a feast for the children with refreshments and with a glass-painting seminar. The children painted a big parrot on glasses from life. Now these works will be exhibited in the gallery as well.

Beside these events, our patients watched the new film « Angels & Demons », participated in a sushi-making seminar and worked on a new cartoon film in the animation studio in the Research Institute of Oncology.

News of Dreams Come True Service

Tamara Z. was presented with a little dog, which she had dreamt of for a long time.
Dima I. attended a show of his favorite legendary band “Pet Shop Boys”.

In this issue of our newsletter we would like to tell you about our neurologist Natalia Evgenievna Novikova. Natalia Evgenievna is remarkable for her high professionalism, consideration, and her ability to establish contacts with patients and their parents very easily. Due to her prescriptions the quantity of convulsive attacks of many children has considerably decreased. They have slept better and their condition has become quieter. Natalia Evgenievna is a very kind, sensitive and good-natured person, who is always ready to help and support.

We are glad to share our news with you! We hope that what you have read touches both your heart and your soul. Please share this joy with your friends and pass this newsletter on to some of them. If any questions arise, don’t hesitate to contact us. We are always happy to hear from you.

See you in the next issue of our bulletin.

Yours faithfully,

Fr. Alexander Tkachenko, Children’s Hospice, June 2009
